We trooped into the darkroom, which in the old days used to be a pig sty, and we bumped into things and each other because of low visibility. The only light came from a distant emergency exit light in the corridor. In the middle of the room I stumbled into something like a table, but that turned out be a sort of king size bed with a faux leather cover that was suspiciously sticky to the touch. There were no chairs.
'What the fuck are we meeting in a darkroom for?' That was the voice of Slasher and in the darkness I heard the others joining him with sounds of accord. These were the murmurs of an insurgency that I had to nip in the bud.
'You gay..., Boss?' Again I sensed dissent and disrespect. I had to make my stand. I had to say something that would make their eyeballs swim.
'Listen up!' I cried a little too loud. 'No, I'm not gay, thank you very much, but it's a cruel world today and our meetings must be unobserved, classified and absolutely TOP secret. Everything that happens in this room stays in this room.'
Someone snorted, I couldn't tell who. My eyes had grown accustomed to the dark and I could make out the diminutive figure of Giant very close to my right elbow. As soon as he became aware of me he moved away. 'Nothing is going to happen in this room,' he mumbled. 'Not tonight and not to me and that's for sure,' he added quite vigorously for such a tiny man.
I explained to the gang that our next assignment was the robbery of a mansion on the hill that belonged to an esteemed professor. 'We need to do a reconnaissance mission first, find out the lay of the land, where the security cameras are located, locks and passwords and... things.' I tried to sound convincing and forceful, but the truth is I had no idea what I was talking about. 'Volunteers?'
A deadly silence filled the darkroom. I heard the shuffle of feet and I sensed Clean Mary moving in my direction. I smelled her perfume before I heard her husky voice whispering in my ear.
'I will do it.' Her breath tickled the hairs in my neck as she laid a cold hand on the lower part of my back.
'Okay, that's settled then,' someone said and again I heard feet shuffle across the floor. I quickly adjourned the meeting.
'There must be some way out of here,' I heard Slasher say to Tiny Giant.
